Exemption from military service in Israel

Service in the Israeli army, known as the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), (Tzva Haganah Le-Israel), is obligatory for most of Israeli citizens, including girls. However, there are certain criteria under which exemption from this obligation can be obtained.There are different conscription criteria for those who completed Aliyah process recently.

One of the key factors that is taken into consideration while checking the eligibility for exemption from military service is the age of the Oleh Hadash (new Israeli citizen) at the time of arrival in Israel. Men who immigrate to Israel after reaching the age of 27 and women who do so after the age of 22 may be eligible for exemption from military service.

Marital status also plays a role. For example, married women or women with children may receive an exemption from military service, even if they came to Israel at an earlier age. Other family circumstances, such as the presence of young children or special family circumstances, may also be taken into consideration.

Health is one of the main criteria when considering military service. If an Oleh Hadash has serious medical contraindications, he or she may be exempted from service. In order to do so, it is necessary to submit the relevant medical documents and pass the IDF medical commission.

Education and studies can also be grounds for deferral  or exemption from military service. Students in higher education may receive a deferral from service while studying.

Israel’s ‘Yeshiva Hesder’ program allows religious young men to combine yeshiva studies with a shortened period of military service, which doesn’t include active military duties. Additionally, religious women may apply for exemption from service based on their religious beliefs and practices.

In certain cases, the IDF may offer alternative civilian service options for individuals with specific professional skills or specializations that are valuable to the military. 

In addition to the above criteria, other individual circumstances of the returnee may be taken into account. Each case is considered individually and the decision is based on a comprehensive analysis of all factors.

Service in the IDF is an important and responsible obligation for many young Israelis. However, for new repatriates coming to Israel, there are certain criteria and conditions that allow them to be exempted from this obligation or to serve for a reduced period of time.
